Across Burma (Myanmar), millions of children are being denied their basic right to education. Decades of military rule, civil conflict, and most recently, a devastating coup have forced more than 5 million school-age children out of the classroom. In a country where sending children to work is often a desperate necessity, Myanmar Mobile Education (MyME) is creating bold, innovative solutions to ensure that learning is never out of reach.
In response to the ongoing crisis and widespread school closures, MyME launched the myME Box—a powerful, low-cost, portable digital learning platform that works with or without internet access. Designed for out-of-school children and youth in the most remote and underserved areas, the myME Box transforms any space into a classroom.
Each device—known as a Portable Digital Classroom (PDC)—contains a mini-computer loaded with a full learning management system (LMS), video lessons, eBooks, games, assessments, and life-skills content from MyME’s curriculum and trusted open-source platforms like Khan Academy, UNICEF, and TED-Ed.
The myME Box offers:
It’s not just a tool—it’s a gateway to opportunity, designed to meet learners where they are, no matter how isolated or impoverished their circumstances may be.
Though MyME’s scope has expanded, its heart remains with the country’s most vulnerable: children forced into labor. In teashops across the country, young boys and girls—some as young as seven—work grueling 16-hour days washing dishes, serving tea, and sleeping on the floor. Many are trafficked from rural villages, stripped of education, safety, and their childhoods.
MyME began by meeting these children where they worked—literally. Mobile classrooms in converted buses brought education, safety, and nourishment to teashop workers for a few precious hours each day. This model proved life-changing, sparking confidence and curiosity in children who had never before held a pencil or heard someone ask what they dreamed of becoming.
Founded by Burmese human rights activist Tim Aye-Hardy, MyME is led by a passionate collective of educators, artists, and advocates who believe lasting change in Burma begins with education for all. The shift toward digital learning with the myME Box has allowed the program to reach more children than ever before—even amid violence, displacement, and disconnection.
MyME’s student-centered, trauma-informed model helps children do more than learn; it helps them heal, grow, and imagine new futures.
Whether through a mobile classroom or a digital learning device, MyME is creating safe pathways to education, hope, and empowerment for the children of Burma. But the need is immense, and the urgency is real.
